Illustrated and written by Anne Merlin
In our new series looking at female role models Anne has illustrated Sonita Alizadeh, a rapper from Afghanistan who has sung out against forced child marriages.
“Looking for some kick ass feminist hip-hop, I stumbled upon Sonita Alizadeh « Brides for sale ». Loving the song, I became curious about its theme & story: child marriage, and discovered -in total awe- that Sonita is herself a very young Afghan rapper who sang to escape a union her parents were planning for her. Talk about artivism!
…I wanna be her when I grow up.”

PS: Kuddos to Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami as well, a talented Iranian documentary filmmaker who helped Sonita’s story spread by making a movie about her: « Sonita ».

There are so many incredible women in the world, stepping up, speaking out and inspiring others with the work they do. Many who are visible, and many who are not. We want to hear from you! we want to celebrate the grassroots female activists and role models in our lives, and share what they are doing. If you have a role model in your life, send us a photo and we will turn it into an illustration. Please send a photo and a small story celebrating her to brushandbowinfo@gmail.com!
